Oscars 2025 nominations: Kieran Culkin becomes first-time nominee
Kieran Culkin has just secured his first Oscar nomination, earning himself a place in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category for his performance in A Real Pain.
At the 97th Oscars nomination ceremony, hosted by Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang, the nominees for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ saw Culkin receive a nomination alongside his fellow Succession co-star Jeremy Strong for The Apprentice, Guy Pearce for The Brutalist, Yura Borisov for Anora, and Edward Norton for A Complete Unknown.
Culkin began acting as a child, having appeared in a minor role alongside his brother, Macaulay Culkin, in Home Alone. Throughout the 1990s, he starred in popular movies like the teen comedy She’s All That and the Oscar-winning The Cider House Rules.
He rose to further prominence in 2010 with a supporting role in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs the World, playing the titular character’s roommate, Wallace Wells. However, the actor is perhaps best known for his role as Roman Roy in Succession, the hit HBO show created by Jesse Armstrong.
His role in A Real Pain, directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg, sees him play Benjamin ‘Benji’ Kaplan, the cousin of Eisenberg’s David. The pair go to Poland together following their grandmother’s death, with the movie powerfully exploring religion, family, identity, and grief.
The movie has already won Culkin a Golden Globe for his performance, so there is a good chance he could scoop up the Oscar, too.
Meanwhile, A Real Pain has also been nominated for ‘Best Original Screenplay’.
