Oscars 2025: Conan O’Brien confirmed as host
It has been announced that Conan O’Brien will host the Oscars in 2025. The former late-night host, producer and writer will take to the stage at the next Academy Awards, which will mark his first time hosting.
The announcement comes after two years of Jimmy Kimmel taking on emceeing duties at the awards ceremony. O’Brien is taking over hosting and seems excited about the upcoming evening.
Ever the comedian, his announcement was laced with humour. “America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme,” he wrote, “In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars.”
Bill Kramer, the Academy’s CEO, was slightly more serious in his announcement. “We are thrilled and honoured to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year,” he said. “He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humour, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise.”
Kramer continued, “His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best – honour the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”
Craig Erwich, the president of the Disney Television Group, also shared in celebrating the news that O’Brien would be hosting. He confirmed his experience working in the industry and with live television means he is perfect for the awards ceremony. “He joins an iconic roster of comedy greats who have served in this role,” he said, “And we are so lucky to have him centre stage for the Oscars.”
Enthusiasm for O’Brien’s appointment seems to have been shared across the board. Executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan expressed excitement at the fact he was hosting. They said, “We are so looking forward to working with him to deliver a fresh, exciting and celebratory show for Hollywood’s biggest night.”
O’Brien is most recognisable for the 20 years he spent hosting late-night talk shows. These are often taped live, so he should be able to deal with the pressure of hosting the Oscars live. He also has plenty of experience writing jokes after spending time as a writer on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons.
The Oscars will be held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and broadcast live in over 200 territories worldwide. The slate of nominations has yet to be revealed, but it is expected to include a wide array of contenders.
It will be aired live on ABC and international outlets on March 2nd, 2025. Nominees will be revealed in the new year.
