Oscars 2024: Sterling K. Brown thinks Robert Downey Jr deserves to win ‘Actor in a Supporting Role’

Sterling K. Brown has received an Oscar nod for ‘Actor in a Supporting Role’ for his performance in American Fiction, but he expects to lose to Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr and is “totally fine with it.”

Downey Jr’s nomination comes from his performance as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring opposite Cillian Murphy in the titular role. He has already taken home a Golden Globe for the role, while picking up nominations at the Baftas and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Brown has been nominated for his performance in Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, but stated during a visit to The Graham Norton Show, “I’mma tell you, Robert Downey Jr.’s gonna win, and he’s incredibly deserving.”

Downey Jr has received two Academy Award nominations in the past, but has never taken one home. In 1993, he was nominated for ‘Best Actor’ in Chaplin, an award he recently revealed that he was glad not to have won. Over a decade later, he received a ‘Best Supporting Actor’ nod for Tropic Thunder. Now, he seems set to take home the title for Oppenheimer.

“He’s an incredible actor,” Brown enthused, “Like, you should give him love.” The actor shared his gratitude for even being nominated alongside the Oppenheimer star, concluding, “The fact that I get a chance to be nominated along with him and Mr. [Robert] De Niro and Ryan Gosling and [Mark] Ruffalo… I’m just happy to be in the room.”

De Niro has received a nod for his part in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, while Ruffalo has been nominated for his part in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. Gosling takes home a nomination for his depiction of Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
