Oscars 2024: Nominations shortlist announced for 10 categories
Ten categories for the 2024 Oscars have been announced, with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie leading the pack and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon coming in close behind.
While the major categories will be announced when the official nominations are unveiled on January 23rd, several technical awards, such as ‘Makeup and Hairstyling’, ‘Sound’ and ‘Visual Effects’ have been released by the Academy. In addition, other awards for ‘Live Action Short Film’, ‘Animated Short Film’, ‘Original Song’, ‘Original Score’, ‘Documentary Feature’, ‘Documentary Short Subject’ and ‘International Feature’ were also announced.
Across the board, Gerwig’s feminist blockbuster, Barbie, has received five nods in three separate categories, ‘Sound’, ‘Original Score’ and ‘Original Song’. In the latter category, three tracks have been shortlisted, ‘Dance The Night’ by Dua Lipa, ‘I’m Just Ken’ by Ryan Gosling and ‘What Was I Made For?’ by Billie Eilish.
Meanwhile, Scorsese’s epic western Killers of the Flower Moon has received the preliminary nod in four categories, ‘Makeup and Hairstyling’, ‘Sound’, ‘Original Score’ and ‘Original Sound’.
Also included in the shortlist for ‘Original Song’ are such beloved tracks as ‘Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven)’ from Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, ‘Road To Freedom’ from George C. Wolfe’s Rustin and ‘Am I Dreaming’ from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Although a shortlist for the coveted ‘Best Picture’ award hasn’t been announced, Scorsese’s and Gerwig’s movies are expected among the lucky bunch. Elsewhere, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is predicted to be among the pack, as well as Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Celine Song’s Past Lives and Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall.
The 2024 Oscars will be held on March 10th, 2024, at the slightly earlier time of 11:00 pm in the United Kingdom. Check out the full shortlist released by the Academy below.
