Oscars 2024: Academy Awards reveal ‘Best Original Song’ nominees

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its nominees for this year’s coveted ‘Best Original Song’ award. The Oscars looks to honour the finest achievements in film from the last 12 months.

This year, the ‘Best Original Song’ category was also set to be extra crowded thanks to the bombastic contribution of Barbie. The hit film was, in essence, a halfway house between a musical and a comedy, abounding with satire.

Therefore, it was no surprise to see ‘I’m Just Ken’ and ‘What Was I Made For?’ both nominated from Greta Gerwig’s feature. The movie received seven nods in total across a range of categories, including Ryan Gosling for his role as Ken.

Last year, the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the Telugu-language film RRR claimed the prize for the ‘Best Original Song’ in 2023. In the process, it became the first Indian film to triumph in this category.

The nominations were revealed at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, by Joker’s Zazie Beetz and The Boys actor Jack Quaid on NBC’s flagship programme Good Morning America.

The prestigious awards show is set to be hosted by comedian and talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel, who has previously been in charge of proceedings on three separate occasions. Kimmel presented the ceremony in 2017 and 2018 before returning to the position in 2023. In a statement, he said: “I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times.”
