Oscars 2024: Academy Awards reveal ‘Best Actress’ nominees

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its nominees for this year’s coveted ‘Best Actress’ award. The 96th annual Oscars is set to take place on March 10th, 2024.

Last year’s Academy Awards ceremony saw a fine selection of nominated movies battle it out. Popular titles included Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical movie The Fabelmans and Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front. Ultimately, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All At Once took home the award.

This year, hot favourites include Christopher Nolan’s anti-war epic Oppenheimer, which entered into a media-elevated battle with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Both titles hit the screens on July 21st, 2023, leading to the unprecedented Barbenheimer phenomenon across social media platforms. Many fans decided to watch both in a double-bill cinema visit, with both movies enjoying the symbiotic relationship.

Once again, these two movies come head to head, with both nominated for the ’Best Picture’ award. However, neither has received a nomination for ‘Best Actress’ with a notable snub for Barbie star Margot Robbie.

Among the front runners for this year’s ‘Best Actress’ nominees this year is Lily Gladstone for her powerful performance alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. In a four-and-a-half-star review of the movie, Far Out wrote: “As expected of Scorsese, every shot is perfectly crafted and brings the nature of the true-crime narrative to new cinematic heights. At three and a half hours long, Killers of the Flower Moon is utterly captivating, sensitive in its approach and an essential work in chronicling the power that the United States would eventually become.”

The nominations were revealed at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, by Joker’s Zazie Beetz and The Boys actor Jack Quaid on NBC’s flagship programme Good Morning America.

In March, the prestigious awards show is set to be hosted by comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who has previously been in charge of proceedings on three separate occasions. Kimmel presented the ceremony in 2017 and 2018 before returning to the position in 2023. In a statement, he said: “I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times.”
