In what has been a severely turbulent year for the film industry, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has today announced the shortlist for those in consideration for the 93rd Oscars Awards ceremony.
Though we know the 2021 Oscars ceremony was first due to take place on February 28, the new date has been moved to April 28th with the hope that the concerns around the current pandemic will be eased. Furthermore, the move has been in place to accommodate the release calendar in 2020.
In an unprecedented turn, the eligibility window for the 2021 Oscars was extended by two months from January 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021.
While delays have caused the major issue to the release of new movies, the Oscars still had a wealth of brilliant pictures to choose from.
You can view the full list of nominees here but, more specifically, see the filmmakers up for the coveted ‘Best Director’ award. Of them, Chloe Zhao leads the way with recognition for her work on the brilliant Nomadland and, alongside Zhao, Thomas Vinterberg, David Fincher, Lee Isaac and Emeral Fennel are all selected.
