It’s been a tough year for the film industry. The coronavirus pandemic has left much of Hollywood at a standstill. Yet, somehow, the 93rd Academy Awards has found enough incredible films to bring us a hotly contested event. One of the strongest categories of all is ‘Best Supporting Actress.’
It’s usually one of the most loved categories of every Oscars event and the 2021 edition of the esteemed awards show, taking place on April 25th, certainly hasn’t disappointed as it brings a star-studded list of nominees to the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category.
As well as the more unusual inclusion o Maria Bakalova, who was pivotal in Sacha Baron Cohen’s reinvigoration of his character Borat in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, there is some Hollywood royalty.
Olivia Colman, most recently famed for her role as Queen Elizabeth, could add another Oscar to her awards cabinet as she takes a nomination for her role starring opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Father. Amanda Seyfried also found her place in the Hollywood pantheon as part of David Fincher’s Netflix special Mank. Completing a hard-hitting triumvirate is Glenn Close, nominated for her role in Hilbilly Elegy.
It’s a category with some serious credentials this year which would make a win for Youn Yuh-Jung, who starred in the soon-to-be cult-classic Minari one of the biggest uspets in Oscars history.
