Oscars 2020: 'Uncut Gems' leads the biggest names to miss out on nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the shortlist of films in consideration for the 92nd Oscars ceremony.

In what must have been a supremely challenging task, the Academy managed to narrow down the 344 feature films eligible for the coveted ‘Best Picture’ category to the chosen few. Of those, the likes of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Bong Joon-ho’s South Korean film Parasite, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and more take the lead.

While the likes of Tarantino and Scorsese did well as part of this year’s nominations, no film enjoyed as much success as Todd Phillips’ critical and commercial giant Joker. With 11 nominations in total, which includes Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for the film’s lead Joaquin Phoenix, Phillips will be optimistic about the chances of triumph when the ceremony arrives on February 10.

While those responsible for Joker will be celebrating into the night, others will be left disappointed by their lack of inclusion—none more so than Adam Sandler and the Safdie Brothers who had high expectations around their crime thriller Uncut Gems which has received glowing reviews the world over.

The film, which was directed by Josh and Benny Safdie who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Ronald Bronstein, stars the likes of Sandler, Kevin Garnett, Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Mike Francesa and more and was being lined up for major success at the 92nd Academy Awards. Instead, however, it has failed to register a single nomination in what is a quite severe and overly harsh snubbing of the film.

Uncut Gems tells the story of Howard Ratner, a jeweller who is battling a terrible gambling addiction while living in New York City’s Diamond District. The film’s main character, played by Sandler who has been heavily praised for his glowing performance, gets in over his head with loan sharks and must retrieve an expensive gem he purchased in order to pay off his debts.

Elsewhere, the Lulu Wang directed comedy-drama The Farewell has also been completely ignored despite lead actress Awkwafina already breaking records with victory in the ‘Best Actress – Musical or Comedy’ category at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.

Jordan Peele’s horror film, US, may feel aggrieved at missing out but Lupita Nyong’o, who delivered a quite brilliant performance in the picture, will feel especially disappointed following her lack of acknowledgement.

Other notable omissions include James Gray’s science fiction adventure film Ad Astra, which stars the likes of Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, which only received the single nomination the category of Sound Mixing. Dolemite Is My Name, the Netflix produced biographical comedy directed by Craig Brewer, also failed the register a single nomination.

Notable films to be snubbed at the 92nd Academy Awards:

  • Uncut Gems – Directed by The Safdie Brothers.
  • Booksmart – Directed by Olivia Wilde.
  • Midsommar – Directed by Ari Aster.
  • Ad Astra – Directed by James Gray.
