Oscars 2019: The Academy announces shortlist for ‘Best Visual Effects’


The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has now announced the ten films that will be in contention for victory in the category of ‘Best Visual Effects’ at the 2019 Oscars

Ten films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 91st Academy Awards was determined by The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee.

A lot of eyes will be on Solo: A Star Wars Story and, despite falling short in terms of commercial success in comparison to Star Wars films in the past, Ron Howard-directed feature film has been included in the Oscars shortlist.

Elsewhere the hotly-tipped First Man starring Ryan Gosling and directed by  Damien Chazelle is in contention alongside the likes of Black Panther, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and more.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Saturday, January 5, 2019. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The films, listed in alphabetical order by title, are:

“First Man”
“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”
“Mary Poppins Returns”
“Ready Player One”
“Solo: A Star Wars Story”
“Welcome to Marwen”
