In what has been a booming year of film, 2018 has set a North America annual box office record of $11.8bn (£9.2bn).
Prominent releases over the Christmas period such as Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns has helped the yearly total surpass that of 2016’s amount of $11.8bn (£8.9bn).
Following on from a trend set two years ago, it is again Disney who sit top of the pile having scooped a domestic gross total of over $3bn (£2.3bn), the second time the studio has taken that amount domestically.
While Disney did have some flops (most notably at the hands of Solo), the help of having the three highest grossing films of the year with Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Incredibles 2 helped them have the edge.
It is the work of Universal’s Jurassic World: Kingdom that competed with Disney, the J. A. Bayona-directed film romped to takings of $416,769,345 (£325,432) to sit in fourth place.
