One dead and six hospitalised at festival in Sydney following MDMA warning from authorities

A man has died, along with six others being hospitalised, at a dance music festival in Sydney, Australia.

The incidents occurred during Dreamstate Music Festival, which took place at Sydney Olympic Park on February 7th, 2026.

In a statement, local police confirmed that the man, who has not been publically identified and was in his 40s, died at the scene due to “medical episodes”. They added, “Six other people were taken to hospital where one remains in a critical condition.”

The police continued, “A crime scene has been established, and police commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

No cause of death has been disclosed; however, on February 8th, New South Wales’ health minister John Graham said, “This death has reignited the debate over government-run pill testing at festivals. It is a reminder that pill testing that has been going on is very important.”

He added (per News.com.au), “We’ve seen health over this festival period has been able to issue urgent information from people based on some of that testing, to let people know whether a particularly dangerous substance is or high potency drugs.”

Prior to the festival, New South Wales’ health department issued a warning in regards to super-strength MDMA that had been detected in the region.

“Some tablets have also been found to contain dipentylone, a synthetic cathinone with stimulant effects,” they explained, per 7 News.

The warning continued, “NSW Health has previously warned the community about the circulation of high-dose MDMA tablets however the ongoing detection of these tablets has prompted further warning.”

Pill testing at festivals in Australia is currently being trialled at a series of events. While it wasn’t available to attendees at Dreamstate, it was rolled out at Laneway, which also took place this weekend in Sydney, and was used by almost 90 people.

Dreamstate Music Festival is yet to make an official statement on the tragic death and the hospitalisations.
