Olympics 2024: Phoenix, Tom Cruise, H.E.R., and more feature at the closing ceremony

A major part of the Olympic spectacle is tied to the star-studded opening and closing ceremonies that mesmerise global audiences every four years. This year’s iteration of the closing ceremony did not disappoint either, generating massive discourse spearheaded by the likes of Phoenix and Tom Cruise.

Following the opening ceremony of the 2024 edition of the Olympics, certain audiences took to the internet to call it controversial because of the unapologetic celebration of the queer community that was present in the performances.

It also saw appearances from major figures such as Lady Gaga and Celine Dion, to which the closing ceremony added another massive roster.

As the Olympics prepares to head to Los Angeles next in 2028, Tom Cruise delivered a characteristic stunt, swooping down from the roof of the stadium while H.E.R. played the instantly recognisable notes of the Mission Impossible theme song.

This was preceded by an impressive rendition of the American national anthem, setting the stage for the LA Olympics in 2028.

The closing ceremony also highlighted several French artists, including the indie outfit Phoenix, who gave their all in a fantastic version of their beloved piece ‘Lisztomania’. Many other guests also came onto the massive stage, ranging from DJ Kavinsky and Air to Ezra Koenig, who joined the celebrations for ‘Tonight’.

Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and the Red Hot Chili Peppers also raised the energy levels of audiences with their appearances, leaving many wondering what the lineup might look like four years from now.
