Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have shared their elegant new single, ‘Flying On The Ground’.
The rhythmic effort is one of the two new tracks that Gallagher has penned for the upcoming High Flying Birds greatest hits record, which marks a decade for the band. Back The Way We Came: Volume 1 (2011-2021) arrives on Friday, June 11th, through Sour Mash Records and was announced last month with their comeback song, ‘We’re On Our Way Now’.
Speaking about the album, Gallagher said: “10 years of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds?? Blimey! Just think of all the things I could have done in that time! The title just came to me one afternoon, at the kitchen table. It’s a saying isn’t it: ‘back the way we came’. I actually thought it was a great title. Which is why it’s got vol 1. Because if there’s another one, I’m not coming up with another title.”
Gallagher has found himself in a rich vein of songwriting form with the most recent pair of singles, and ‘Flying On The Ground’ sees the High Flying Birds create a delightful scoop of vintage pop as he continues to age gracefully rather than chase yesterday.
Noel is characteristically upbeat about the new release, commenting: “‘Flying On The Ground’ is literally the best thing I’ve released since the last thing I released. If Burt Bacharach wrote for Motown this is what it would sound like…only not as good…obviously.”
‘Flying On The Ground’ sees Gallagher lend a hand from a pair of female backing singers, which add an extra dimension to his sound, and as he proved with ‘We’re On Our Way Now’, the musician can turn his hand to a triumphant acoustic ballad whenever he pleases. However, ‘Flying On The Ground’ sees him looking forward from both a sonic and lyrical perspective rather than sticking in familiar territories.
