Noel Gallagher shares new video for ‘We’re On Our Way Now’

Noel Gallagher has released a new video for his latest single with the High Flying Birds, ‘We’re On Our Way Now’.

With nods to French New Wave auteurs like Godard and Varda, the video stars everyone’s second or third favourite Doctor Matt Smith alongside model/actress Gala Gordon. This is Gordon’s second video with a Britpop forefather: she previously appeared in Suede’s visualizer for ‘Hit Me’.

Let me ask a fairly open ended question: is it cheesy for Gallagher to reference his own material? He does it by shouting out ‘Cast No Shadow’ in the lyrics for this tune, and it’s well earned because ‘Cast No Shadow’ is easily top five Oasis material, along with ‘Champaign Supernova’, ‘Talk Tonight’ (I’m a softy, sue me), ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’, and ‘Wonderwall’, with ‘Supersonic’, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, ‘Don’t Go Away’, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’, ‘Some Might Say’ and ‘Slide Away’ on the outside looking in, followed by everything else that came out before 1998 (except ‘Magic Pie’), then a steep drop off, and then everything that came out in the new millennium (and also ‘Magic Pie’). Is it more or less cheesy than every time he makes a Beatles reference? It was alright in ‘Supersonic’, less cute in ‘Morning Glory’, and just plain lazy in ‘The Shock of The Lightning’.

It’s a bit of a strange time to be following Noel Gallagher: He’s putting out perfectly fine music, he’s coming off as a relatively humble elder statesman of British pop music in interviews, he’s the ambassador for Record Store Day 2021, he’s getting along with people who he once publicly wished death upon. Is it possible that time and experience has worn the once ornery Britpop star down into the British version of Dave Grohl?

Probably not. Given the opportunity, Gallagher will most likely seize the day, call someone a wanker, and pick a Twitter fight with Liam once again. It’s such a shame. C’mon, lads, Man City is doing so well this year! We can all celebrate at the pub together. If the boys in blue can’t bring the eternally-warring siblings together as they did during the 2011-12 season, the fissure might be more serious than anyone who has taken their numerous previous fissures before.
