Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds celebrate their tenth anniversary with the brand new track, ‘We’re On Our Way Now’.
The new track is soaked in melancholia and sees a wistful Noel look back upon embarking on a new adventure. After ten years, Gallagher glances over his shoulder at an old friend that he’s lost on a journey to where he is today. The song feels like a profound way to commemorate the High Flying Birds turning ten.
Gallagher even not-so-subtly name drops an Oasis song title, which surely isn’t a coincidence. Still, knowing Noel, it’s more likely to have been deliberately placed there to get people talking rather than being about his little brother, Liam.
He sings, “Good luck in the afterlife, I hear the morning sun, Doesn’t cast no shadow, You chose to drift away but look at you now.”
The new single is one of two new tracks that Gallagher has written for his upcoming High Flying Birds greatest hits record, Back The Way We Came: Volume 1 (2011-2021), which arrives on June 11th through Sour Mash Records.
Speaking about the release, Gallagher said: “10 years of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds?? Blimey! … Just think of all the things I could have done in that time!”
Adding: “The title just came to me one afternoon, at the kitchen table,” he added. “It’s a saying isn’t it: ‘back the way we came’. I actually thought it was a great title. Which is why it’s got vol 1. Because if there’s another one, I’m not coming up with another title.”
It’s wild to think that it’s already been a decade since Noel began his solo venture with the High Flying Birds, and it doesn’t seem like he’s attempting to slow down anytime soon. ‘We’re On Our Way Now’ is a quintessential acoustic-led Noel Gallagher track and confirms that he still possesses his special touch.
