Noel Gallagher calls Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance “absolute nonsense”
Noel Gallagher has weighed in on Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance, describing it as “absolute nonsense.”
Lamar performed for the iconic Super Bowl halftime slot for the first time on Sunday, performing a nearly 15-minute set that flipped between his deeper cuts to more successfully recognisable hits and included performance contributions from both Samuel L Jackson and Serena Williams.
While appearing on TalkSPORT this evening, February 11th, the Oasis songwriter was asked for his take on Lamar’s much-talked-about show. Rather swiftly, Gallagher said to hosts Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent, “I had to switch it off.” He continued, “It was absolute nonsense.”
When asked about the specific details of the show that he didn’t like, Gallagher responded: “I didn’t watch it all, I just switched it off. There was like 300 people getting out of a car in the first two minutes”.
Gallagher’s take fed into a wider grumbling he had on the Super Bowl format, admitting: “But no I don’t like the halftime nonsense, it’s usually artists I don’t like” before continuing to admit “I never watch it, I’m not interested it” when asked about his favourite past performances.
Elsewhere in the interview, Gallagher elaborated on his concerns over the mixing of music and sport, claiming: “Americans are taking over our sport, they’re taking over the Premier League, they’ll take over the Champions League, trust me, 20 years from now it will all be nonsense”.
While Lamar’s halftime show has been subject to mixed reviews, his back catalogue has experienced a sharp increase in streams since Sunday’s performance.
His swipe at Drake ‘Not Like Us‘ saw a 430 per cent increase, while ‘HUMBLE’ had a 300 per cent increase and ‘All the Stars’ went up by 290 per cent. ‘Man at the Garden’, ‘DNA’, and ‘Euphoria’ also increased by 260 per cent, while ‘Squabble Up’ and ‘Peekaboo’ went up by 230 per cent, and ‘Luther’ and ‘TV Off’ saw a 170 per cent increase.
