Nick Cave’s shares cover of Édith Piaf’s ‘La Vie En Rose’ from Jack Antonoff’s ‘The New Look’ soundtrack

As part of the soundtrack for Apple TV+’s show The New Look, super producer Jack Antonoff called upon an all-star cast to share their take on early to mid-20th century hits, and the latest cut to arrive is Nick Cave‘s take on Édith Piaf’s ‘La Vie En Rose’.

On the cover, Cave leans fully into the romance of Piaf’s original. With a simple but elegant instrumentation of pianos and light horns, the singer transforms himself into a bar fly by a beat up piano in the 1900s.

‘La Vie En Rose’ is a highly covered song with numerous versions from artists across all genres. Lucy Dacus once offered an indie-pop take, while Grace Jones made the song a Bossa Nova hit in the ’70s. Furthermore, Lady Gaga even took on the song in its original French glory for A Star Is Born. In his take, Cave keeps it delicate and sweet, letting the tenderness of the lyrics keep the spotlight.

Cave’s collaboration with Antonoff on ‘La Vie En Rose’ marks the first time in many years that the Australian has handed the production reins to somebody else. With Cave’s wistful vocal at the front of the mix, it’s a deliciously whispery and seductive rendition, especially when heard through headphones.

As no stranger to producing music for films, having worked on the scores of projects like Blonde and Dahmer, unsurprisingly, Cave’s version of the song is perfectly cinematic and atmospheric. The musician is also set to helm the soundtrack to the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black.

The immersive soundtrack for The New Look helps the show tell the story of fashion icons Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and their peers as they confront the challenges of World War II while spearheading the evolution of contemporary fashion. The full tracklist also features songs from Beabadoobee and Antonoff’s own band, Bleachers, alongside others that we haven’t heard yet.

The entire soundtrack is set for release on March 8th, while episodes of The New Look are already streaming on Apple TV+.
