Nick Cave’s novel ‘The Death of Bunny Munro’ to be adapted into six-part series

Nick Cave‘s 2009 novel The Death of Bunny Munro is set to be adapted by Sky Studios into a six-part series starring Matt Smith in the titular role.

Smith, best known for his roles in Doctor Who, The Crown and The House of Dragon, will also serve as an executive producer on the project, as will Cave. Pete Jackson has written the series, which Industry’s Isabella Eklöf will direct.

A synopsis for the series reads: “Following his wife Libby’s suicide, sex addict, door-to-door beauty product salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro finds himself saddled with a young son and only a loose concept of parenting. Together with nine-year-old Bunny Junior he embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control road trip across Southern England as the two struggle to contain their grief in very different ways.”

It continues: “The Death of Bunny Munro is a darkly comic and unflinching modern-day parable as well as a tender portrait of the relationship between father and son.”

As of yet, they are yet to cast an actor for Bunny Junior but hope to uncover an “exciting new talent” to fulfil the role. Filming will begin next spring in England, and it will later be broadcast on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom.

Smith said in a statement: “To work alongside Nick Cave on The Death of Bunny Munro feels like a great honour. It’s a brilliant exploration of love, grief, and chaos. At its heart a deep, difficult, and tender story about a father and son, coping with loss and change.”

Cave added: “Finally, someone with the courage to take on this unholy tale. I am thrilled that Sky and Clerkenwell Films are bringing Bunny to life, in all his flawed glory, and I can think of nobody better than Matt Smith to play him.”

Furthermore, Meghan Lyvers, director of original series at Sky Studios said:“We are thrilled to support Pete Jackson, Matt Smith, Nick Cave, Isabella Eklöf and Clerkenwell Films in bringing this beloved novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, to screen as a provocative, heartbreaking, and powerful examination of a relationship between father and son as we build on our commitment to bring bold characters and ambitious stories to our Sky audiences.”

Earlier this year, Cave previously claimed plans for an adaptation were “chugging along” and said “there are actors attached” to the project. However, at that stage, he remained tight-lipped about Smith’s involvement.
