Nick Cave thinks Russell Brand’s new book is bad news for Christianity’s PR department

It’s safe to say Nick Cave won’t be rushing out to buy a copy of Russell Brand’s new book, How to Become A Christian in Seven Days.

The book, which has been made available to buy through former Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s website, details Brand’s conversion to Christianity.

Brand, who was baptised in the Thames by survival expert Bear Grylls in 2024, has recently been on a haphazard promotional tour of the book, including an agonising interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored that saw him fail to find a particular passage from the bible that he brought with him to the interview.

Additionally, earlier last week, on his press run in support of How to Become A Christian in Seven Days, Brand made headlines when he told Megyn Kelly that he slept with a 16-year-old when he was a 30-year-old.

In the latest edition of his Red Hand Files newsletter, Cave, who has spoken at length in recent years about his interest in Christianity, was asked for his thoughts on Brand’s new book, to which he bluntly replied, “Good for atheism.”

Conversely, when Cave released his last book, Faith, Hope and Carnage, in 2022, Brand took to social media to share an image of him reading it and was full of praise for the body of work.

He wrote on Instagram, “Nick Cave – Vampire healer! Beautiful genius, wounded sage. Squares the circle and circles the squares in this wonderful book.”

Previously, when appearing as a guest on Desert Island Discs in 2013, Brand selected ‘Red Right Hand‘ by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as one of his eight song selections.

Notably, later this year, Brand is set to face trial in London after being charged with rape and sexual assault relating to alleged incidents between 1999 and 2009.

Brand has pleaded not guilty to all of the seven charges and strongly denies engaging in any non-consensual behaviour.
