Nick Cave celebrated in France with two prestigious honours
Nick Cave has received two prestigious honours during a recent visit to the French city of Arles.
Cave is currently on a solo European tour, which recently stopped by in France for a performance in Cannes on July 24th before moving on to Arles for a show at the Théâtre Antique on July 26th.
While in Arles, which is situated on the Rhône River, Cave was the subject of a ceremony at the Arles’ Hôtel de Ville on the morning of the show, which saw him be awarded with the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by Bertrand Burgalat, the president of the National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing.
The Order of Arts and Letters is a special honour that is only given to figures who are deemed to have “significantly contributed to the enrichment of the French cultural inheritance,” per Billboard.
Additionally, as a way of Arles expressing gratitude to Cave’s “special ties” to the city, the city’s Mayor, Patrick de Carolis, presented the Australian musician with the City of Arles Medal. In his speech, de Carolis told Cave: “You are a citizen of the world and a citizen of Arles.”
Kenny Gates, the co-founder of record label PIAS, which Cave is signed to, also received he City of Arles Medal of Honour. Notably, PIAS is a longstanding partner of Arles’ label Harmonia Mundi.
Cave’s solo tour is set to resume next week with three dates at Grieghallen in Bergen, Norway. Additionally, in August, he’ll perform in Latvia, Germany, Bulgaria, and Macedonia before concluding the run of dates in Luxembourg in September.
Earlier this week, Cave shared a new video by Andrew Dominik for The Bad Seeds’ song ‘Tupelo’ to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Despite Cave’s vocal criticism of artificial intelligence, the new visuals use this controversial technology, and Cave admitted, “As I watched Andrew’s surreal little film, I felt my view of AI as an artistic device soften. To some extent, my mind was changed.”
