Nick Cave and Warren Ellis share ‘Song For Amy’ from Amy Winehouse biopic soundtrack

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have shared a brand new song, ‘Song For Amy’, taken from two albums connected to the latest Back to Black movie, which Ellis and Cave were responsible for. The film has already been released in cinemas in the UK but won’t be available in the States until May 17th.

A windchime-like effect welcomes in the new song before Nick Cave’s serene vocals preach about love and loss. The new song, written primarily for the new Winehouse biopic, is a rather dull number and, in that sense, perfectly aligned with the film itself. However, it and the two albums for the film soundtrack and score are available now.

The new Amy Winehouse biopic has been shrouded in controversy as reviews for the film have either been representative of one extreme or the other. Far Out gave the movie our lowest rating in a while, with only half a star awarded to “A disinterested insult to the life of Amy Winehouse.”

In a review for the film, Far Out wrote, “For a film about the life of a person full of curiosity, humour and supreme talent, Sam Taylor-Johnson manages a depiction of Amy Winehouse that is shockingly apathetic about the subject at hand… More akin to an episode of Horrible Histories than a nuanced take on one of Britain’s most iconic musicians of the 21st century, the film might just be one of the worst biopics of modern times.”

The film itself somewhat overshadows the soundtrack, but Nick Cave and Warren Ellis manage to do an adequate job with the overall musical composition. They have another project coming out shortly, as they have a new album, Wild God, due later in the year.

Wild God is the 18th studio album from the duo. They started working on the album on New Year’s Day in 2023, recording sessions at Miraval Studios in Provence, France, and Soundtree Studios in London.

In talking about the new album, Cave said, “I hope the album has the effect on listeners that it’s had on me… It bursts out of the speaker and I get swept up with it,” he said, “It’s a complicated record, but it’s also deeply and joyously infectious. There is never a master plan when we make a record. The records rather reflect back the emotional state of the writers and musicians who played them. Listening to this, I don’t know, it seems we’re happy.”

While we wait for the new album, you can listen to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’s work on ‘Song For Amy’ now.
