Nadine Shah has announced a new Instagram live interview series entitled ‘Payback’ in which Shah flips the script, now taking on the role of the interviewer rather than the interviewee and speaking to journalists, presenters and more.
The series will begin tomorrow (30 April) at 9pm with an interview between Shah and The Quietus’ John Doran. Next Tuesday (5 May) Shah will continue the series by speaking to journalist and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer.
“I’ve always found it a weird format, to be asked all these questions and talk about myself over and over,” Shah said in a statement. “One-sided conversations aren’t natural but I understand why they have to be the way they are. It’s often been the case over the years that me and whoever is interviewing will end up staying on in a pub and having drinks together long after the interview is concluded. I feel like once my part’s done, it’s time to ask the questions back to them. Consequently, I’ve made many good friends in music journalism on the back of these meetings.”
Shah adds: “I’m not interested in the famous musician interviews famous musician podcast, I find them boring and egotistical. The music journalists are the ones with all the truly properly nitty gritty stories.”
The new series comes during the lead up to Shah’s new album Kitchen Sink which will be released on 5 June via Infectious Music with tracks ‘Ladies For Babies (Goats For Love)’, ‘Trad’ and title track ‘Kitchen Sink’ having been shared so far.
