Muse return with heavy new single, ‘Unravelling’

Muse have released their first new music since 2022 with the heavy, haunting track, ‘Unravelling’.

The band have often played the single live and debuted at their intimate warm-up show at the House of Culture in Helsinki. Muse then introduced the song to an audience of over 50,000 at their headline set at Rockfest.

As per the official description, ‘Unravelling’ “puts a new spin on the genre-clash creativity that has become a hallmark of the Muse experience.”

The track was produced by Grammy nominee Dan Lancaster, who has previously worked with Bring Me The Horizon and Blink-182. Lancaster is no stranger to the band, performing keyboards and additional guitar in the Muse live band since 2022.

In true Muse style, ‘Unravelling’ is a maximalist, theatrical offering. The pre-chorus builds with gritty, heavy riffs before opening breathlessly into an expensive chorus. “An insect trappеd in amber, I’m a fading high / Our heaven is a lie,” Matthew Bellamy sings throughout the single.

An epic, soaring guitar solo gushes out after an EDM-inspired breakdown, after which Bellamy is back to his apocalyptic musings. “Feeling the glow / Die inside of our bones / This is a hymn for our love / With no God and no throne, no throne,” he sings. In keeping with the title, the song paints a picture of a society fractured, fragmenting and unravelling into disarray.

The band’s last offering was 2022 album, Will of the People. It became their seventh consecutive album to top the chart. The album also it made history as it was the first UK number one album to incorporate NFT technology

Muse have plenty more headline performances up their sleeve; on June 20th, they will take to the Hellfest stage. Festivals like Pinkpop, Tons of Rock, STHLM Fields and Open’er Festival will also see the eccentric band shred their way through epic headline sets.
