The movies Margot Robbie refuses to watch out of spite: “It infuriates people so much”

We’ve all got our cinematic blind spots; after all, there are so many films in the world that it is simply impossible to have all bases covered. Perhaps self-confessed obsessive cinephiles like Quentin Tarantino or Martin Scorsese have fewer blind spots – they’re the kinds of people who can likely say “I’ve seen it,” no matter how obscure the title – but for most of us, there is always going to be some glaringly large gaps in our cinematic education.

Even the most acclaimed Hollywood stars will admit to never having seen a stone-cold classic. There’s only so much time in the day, and with such busy schedules, it’s no wonder that many famous actors will admit to having little time to actually sit down and watch a film. For Margot Robbie, there is a certain franchise that she has never found the time to watch, but funnily enough, the reaction this gets has encouraged her to never watch it.

We’ve surely all experienced outraged reactions from people because of one of our cinematic blind spots at some point in our lives. “You’ve never seen Fight Club?” someone might exclaim, or perhaps even “How have you never seen The Godfather?” Sometimes, a film just doesn’t appeal to us, regardless of the fact that it’s meant to be really good. And maybe we would love it if we actually got round to watching it, but, like Robbie, many of us can certainly admit to not watching something simply out of spite.

In an interview with MTV News, Robbie revealed that it was Leonardo DiCaprio, her co-star in both The Wolf of Wall Street and later Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, who called her out for some shocking gaps in her cinematic knowledge. “I remember when you and I did Wolf of Wall Street that you would get mad at me for anytime I’d mention a movie I hadn’t seen, he’d be like, ‘How have you not seen Citizen Kane? How can you work in this industry and not see Citizen Kane?!’”

While many people can admit to never actually having seen Citizen Kane – it’s one of those movies that remains on watchlists for years – fewer can say they’ve never seen a single Star Wars film, something that Robbie has proudly admitted to.

“I’ve never seen any Star Wars, and I kind of don’t watch it now just because it infuriates people so much. They’re like, ‘How?! How have you never watched any Star Wars?!’” It might be one of the biggest franchises in the world, first emerging in 1977 – 13 years before Robbie was born – but the actor simply isn’t interested in the epic sci-fi series.

Directed by George Lucas, the first Star Wars movie was a monumental moment in cinematic history. Emerging in the wake of successful sci-fi movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey and summer blockbusters like Jaws, people flocked to see the space opera on the big screen, and it has endured as a stalwart part of popular culture ever since.

Even if you’ve never seen a Star Wars movie, you will likely still be familiar with classic quotes and characters from the films, and for Robbie, it seems that this is as far as her knowledge of the franchise stretches. It’s safe to say that we probably won’t be seeing Robbie in any new Star Wars projects in the future.
