The movie Demi Moore watches annually: “It’s literally every year”
Every long-lasting acting career experiences its fair share of ups and downs, but recent evidence indicates that Demi Moore could be in line for a major resurgence after winning huge amount of praise for two of her most recent performances.
The latest edition of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series Feud recreated the rivalry between Truman Capote and the Swan family, who took issue with the writer using them as the basis for his scandalous – and ultimately unfinished – novel Answered Prayers. Moore plays socialite and showgirl Ann Woodward, effortlessly exuding the same magnitude of star power that made her a household name in the 1990s.
Meanwhile, writer and director Coralie Fargeat’s body horror The Substance is being hailed as the single best performance Moore has ever given, with the Palme d’Or nominee receiving an extended standing ovation after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival and beginning an early murmuring of Academy Award buzz for its resurgent star.
At one point the highest-paid female actor in the industry, Moore was riding the crest of a wave after Ghost elevated her firmly onto the A-list, before the likes of A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal, and Disclosure cemented her place in Tinseltown’s elite. All good things must come to an end, though, and while she was compensated to a record-breaking degree after earning upwards of $10million apiece for Andrew Bergman’s Striptease and Ridley Scott’s G.I. Jane, it coincided with a downturn.
Moore never faded entirely from the spotlight, but her profile has never reached the same heights as it did during its initial peak. Although considering recent reviews, The Substance could end up lighting the touchpaper on a full-fledged renaissance. Despite being one of her favourite movies, though, she didn’t end up lobbying hard for a role in the long-awaited sequel to a Tim Burton classic.
It’s been decades in the making, but Michael Keaton will finally return as the title character in Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The original starred Alec Baldwin – who won’t be reprising his character of Adam Maitland – but in a joint interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the actor’s co-star in the 2016 drama Blind couldn’t hide her enthusiasm.
“OK, you want to know what one of my favourites is, actually? 100% every year, by the way? Beetlejuice,” she said. “Literally, it’s literally every year. Every year. I love Beetlejuice. Truly.” Not enough to go banging on Burton’s door demanding she get involved in the sequel, it would seem, but maybe Moore didn’t want to sully her admiration of the original by trying to muscle her way into the follow-up.
It’s taken 36 years for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to escape from the depths of development hell to make it into cinemas, and based on how much she adores the first instalment, it’s reasonable to expect that Moore will be there on opening night.
