Morrissey signs deal with Sire Records after three years without label
Morrissey has finally signed a new deal with Sire Records after leaving Capitol Records in 2022.
The former frontman of The Smiths made the announcement on his social media channels by sharing a logo of the famous record deal. He also uploaded the Sire Records logo to his website.
While Morrissey did not make any comment besides sharing the logo, a representative has confirmed to Rolling Stone that Sire Records is his new home.
The Mancunian has not released a studio album since I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, which arrived via BMG in 2020. He subsequently left the label and signed for Capitol Records, announcing Bonfire of Teenagers in 2022 before parting ways with Capitol. As a result, the album is yet to materialise.
Bonfire of Teenagers was recorded between 2020 and 2021. In an interview with The Telegraph in 2024, Morrissey claimed that a major reason was due to the content of the title track, which was written about the Manchester bombing in 2017 at an Ariana Grande concert.
He also alleged, “Every major label in London has refused Bonfire of Teenagers whilst also admitting that it is a masterpiece. And although there is nothing insulting or antagonistic in the title track, label bosses say they are worried that The Guardian would make their lives hell if they supported any such social awareness.”
Additionally, during a show in New Jersey in November 2024, he lamented his current situation in the music industry, telling the crowd, “As you know, nobody will release my music anymore. As you know because I’m a chief exponent of free speech. In England at least, it’s now criminalised.”
In addition to having Bonfire of Teenagers sitting on a shelf, he also recorded You’re Right, It’s Time, originally titled Without Music the World Dies, at La Fabrique Studios in France with producer Joe Chiccarelli in 2023.
The singer had revealed intentions for the album to arrive in September 2025, but no official announcement was ever made.
Morrissey finding a new home at Sire Records comes weeks after he confirmed details of a European tour in 2026, including a date at The O2 Arena in London on February 28th.
