Morgan Wallen selling merchandise mocking ‘Saturday Night Live’ controversy
Following his controversial exit from Saturday Night Live during the closing credits, country singer Morgan Wallen has begun selling his own merchandise that appears to mock the incident and the cryptic social media posts that followed.
Wallen, who was booked as the musical guest for last week’s episode of the late-night variety show, appeared to storm off set during the closing credits without saying as much as thank you to all of the other cast members and guest host Mikey Madison.
After the broadcast, he shared an image on his Instagram story that appeared to be taken from on board his private jet and bore the caption: “Get me to God’s country.”
Now, the 31-year-old singer has begun selling t-shirts and hats that use the same caption via the merchandise store on his official website.
SNL cast member Kenan Thompson commented on the bemusing decision made by Wallen, stating: “I don’t know what goes through people’s minds when they decide to do stuff like that. I don’t know if he understood the assignment or not, or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way,” before joking, “I thought maybe he had to go to the potty or something.”
Thompson would note that his behaviour on set was similar to that of Prince when he appeared on the show, although he would concede that Wallen isn’t known for being as “notoriously standoffish” as the ‘Purple Rain’ singer.
Representatives for Wallen have since declared that no harm was meant by his abrupt departure or the subsequent social media post and that he had been exiting the stage in the same fashion during dress rehearsals.
