Michael Mann provides update on ‘Heat 2’

After previously announcing that he was working on a screenplay for Heat 2, Michael Mann has now shared that the script is finally complete and he has sent a draft to Warner Bros.

In a recent Q&A, the director behind Heat, Collateral and Ferrari said, “I just finished the screenplay and handed in the first draft.”

As a sequel to the beloved 1995 crime thriller, there has been much speculation over the plot of the film. Mann hasn’t revealed anything about the story yet, only elaborating on his decision to share the script with Warner Brothers, saying to Vulture, “In this case it was Warner Brothers. Any more than that, I can’t talk about. But it’s an exciting project.”

Mann is most well-known for Heat, which follows a cat-and-mouse relationship between a criminal mastermind (played by Robert De Niro) who is planning his final job and a police lieutenant (played by Al Pacino) who develops a strange kinship with the criminal despite being tasked with catching him. Alongside Pacino and De Niro, Val Kilmer, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman and Jon Voight also star.

Mann has also provided updates on other projects, implying that he was interested in making a film about the 1968 Battle of Hué, which was one of the most brutal battles during the Vietnam War.

Elsewhere, during the interview, Mann responded to the idea that his films have only increased in popularity over the years, saying, “I don’t like to speculate. I think it may have to do with what’s in the work. I’m not a journeyman director; I’d like to be, because I love shooting. But I put a lot into a film, and so I think sometimes they have layers of relating. They’re not simple.”

He continued: “They may be totally accessible — not all my films, but some of them may be accessible just as something that’s going to flow, just going to occupy you for two hours, or two hours and 45 minutes in the case of Heat and Insider — but there’s also a lot there, because my ambition was to put a lot of depth into it. I probably shouldn’t even be answering this question to tell you the truth.”
