“The Juice is loose!”: Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder return in ‘Beetlejuice 2’ trailer
The highly anticipated sequel to Beetlejuice, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but otherwise known as Beetlejuice 2, caused a stir in the UK last year when Tim Burton revealed that he would shoot the movie at Warner Bros Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire.
Hertfordshire locals were delighted to spot star actor Winona Ryder filming on location at a former school near Hitchin in May. Joining the Stranger Things star on the cast is Michael Keaton, who returns to his classic role as Beetlejuice.
The original horror comedy movie arrived in 1988 and followed the story of a recently deceased couple. As ghosts haunt their old house, the couple employs Beetlejuice, an eccentric “bio-exorcist” from the underworld, to ward off newcomers looking to buy the property.
The movie earned a cult following and raised Burton’s status as a top-class director in his favoured realm of gothic storytelling. Over the past 35 years, the movie has remained a classic, with ageing fans eagerly awaiting news of a sequel.
A year since Ryder was spotted in Hertfordshire, Warner Bros has now released the first trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The short teaser was shared first on the movie’s official Instagram account. “The Juice is loose!” the caption read.
The movie sees Burton reunite with Keaton, with whom he also collaborated on the 1989 movie Batman, another Warner Bros. production from Hertfordshire. In 2023, Keaton also returned to his Batman role in The Flash.
Alongside Keaton, Ryder stars as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. Meanwhile, Burton’s Wednesday star Jenna Ortega appears on the cast as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, and Justin Theroux portrays Rory. Legendary actor Willem Dafoe is also attached to the project, but details surrounding his character are yet to be revealed.
Likewise, Burton has kept much of the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice plot under wraps for now. However, an official synopsis from Warner Bros reveals that three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River amid a family emergency.
“Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened,” the synopsis reads. “It’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.”
