Michael Che formally apologises to Scarlett Johansson on ‘SNL’ episode
During the final episode of Saturday Night Live‘s 50th season, Michael Che brought out Scarlett Johansson in the ‘Weekend Update’ segment to lovingly apologise for a previous joke.
Usually, the ‘Weekend Update’ part of the show sees Che and Johansson’s husband, Colin Jost, read crude jokes off a teleprompter that are not made known to them beforehand. Che most often targetted his colleague’s wife with the prompt, which In turn made Jost read out uncomfortably funny directs at Johansson.
The most famous of these is a joke from a December SNL show. “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu,” Jost began. “But I ain’t trippin’. I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.” Johansson was in the studio watching through a monitor. She laughed awkwardly.
Now, Che addressed Johansson directly, calling for her to take the stage with him: “Before I tell another joke, I wanna take this opportunity to apologise to someone I hurt, Scarlett, can you come out here?”
When the star was seated comfortably next to Che, he apologised in humorous fashion. “The fact is, I was just lashing out because I’m jealous. I’ve never even seen a human vagina,” he said, appearing to read lines penned by Jost. “And notice I said ‘human,’ because I once spent the summer on a farm.”
Johansson reminisced about the original joke to Vanity Fair, “I was like, ‘Wow, you really are seventh-, eighth-grade boys…’ I feel like it’s almost my responsibility to come up with some way to burn Michael back. Retaliation, I’d say, should be expected.”
On the episode, musician Bad Bunny performed his songs ‘Nuevayol’ and ‘Perfumito Neuvo’. The singer is the ninth most listened to artist on Spotify, so his appearance rounded out the historic ending in style.
