Michael Cera wants Allan to have a ‘Barbie’ spin-off movie
Barbie actor Michael Cera is willing to return as his character Allan in a potential spin-off movie, despite director Greta Gerwig previously dismissing talk of a sequel.
As of yet, there is no talk of the spin-off movie being in development. However, if circumstances changed, Cera wouldn’t take any convincing to participate in the project. In the movie, his character is the introverted accomplice to Ken, played by Ryan Gosling. Initially, Jonathan Groff was lined up for the role but pulled out due to scheduling conflicts, leading to Cera’s casting.
Reflecting on Barbie, Cera said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon: “(It was an) amazing thing to be a part of. I mean, I couldn’t believe that I had a chance to be a part of it. It just came out of nowhere for me. I think I was like a last-minute replacement of someone, the person they actually wanted.”
The actor also gave his green light for a potential spin-off, stating: “I think it would be kind of a weird movie, but I’m there. He’s kind of like an inactive character. He kind of just stands [there]. For me, the biggest inspiration for the character was Hans Moleman, that character in The Simpsons. He just stands there all the time. For me, that’s like the core of the character.”
Despite the box office success of Barbie, which was the highest-grossing movie of 2023, Gerwig and star Margot Robbie currently have no plans to reunite for a sequel.
The Australian actor told the AP in November: “I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something…Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next”.
Meanwhile, Gerwig previously said: “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got…I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”
While Gerwig and Robbie have been snubbed in the ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ categories, respectively, at the Academy Awards, Barbie is still up for eight prizes at the ceremony, which takes place on March 10th in Los Angeles.
