Metallica are launching a new podcast that will go behind the scenes and revisit their classic 1991 LP, The Black Album. Inventively entitled The Metallica Podcast, it will celebrate the iconic album’s 30th anniversary, which arrives on August 12.
The band made the announcement on social media, revealing that the first eight episodes are “coming soon”. In the teaser, legendary drummer Lars Ulrich said: “This album was the right combination of songs, right combination of producer with the right combination of desire, tenacity, lineup of ideas.”
Frontman James Hetfield also weighs in: “The insanity that we do just to keep our own sanity, people identify with it and the fact that they’re not alone and we know that we’re not alone is what makes it all happen for me.” The teaser’s artwork introduces the forthcoming series as ‘Volume I: The Black Album’ – perhaps pointing to follow up series on other Metallica albums.
This news comes amid an exciting time for the metal legends. Last month, they announced a collaboration with Vans celebrating the album’s anniversary. The collection featured two limited-edition designs of Vans’ Sk8-Hi and classic slip-on shows, featuring the iconic artwork designed by long-term Metallica collaborator, Pushead.
The record will be released in a “definitive” reissue on September 10. This will feature a 180-gram double vinyl LP, a CD and a 3x CD “expanded edition”, followed by digital download, streaming and a limited-edition deluxe box set.
The lengthy celebrations do not end there. The Metallica Blacklist will also be released digitally on the same date. It features over fifty artists providing a “unique interpretation” of Black Album songs. Artists scheduled to feature include Weezer, Miley Cyrus, Phoebe Bridgers and Elton John, to name but a few.
Profits will be split between and donated to charities of the band’s choice.
