Dave wins the 2019 Mercury Prize for his album ‘Psychodrama’

Rapper David Orobosa Omoregie, known more commonly by his stage name Dave, has won the 2019 Mercury Prize for his album Psychodrama.

Dave has edged out stiff competition from the likes of Foals, Idles, Slowthai and more.

“What a privilege it is to be in this room,” host Annie Mac said while revealing the winner. What an exceptional list. The winning album showed remarkable levels of musicianship, artistry, courage and honesty.”

Psychodrama, released as Dave’s debut album in March, features collaborations with J Hus, Burna Boy and Ruelle and is written as a concept album inspired by the rapper’s brother. “I don’t know what to say,” he said while accepting his award. “I want to firstly thank God. I want to invite my mum up onto stage.”

He added: “I want to thank everyone that made this happen, I want to thank all of the excdeptional musicians who performed tonight… I respect you all so highly.”

He concluded by offering a word to his brother: “Even though you can’t be here today, I know you’re watching this bro. I’m so grateful.
