Mdou Moctar announce new album ‘Funeral For Justice’
Mdou Moctar have announced their new album, titled Funeral For Justice, set to arrive on May 3rd via Matador Records. Funeral For Justice marks Mdou Moctar’s first full length release in three years, following on from Afrique Victime in 2021.
Following the release of Afrique Victims, the band the record took to stages across the globe for two years. Funeral For Justice was recorded at the tail-end of that tour, and sees the quartet pairing unflinchingly political lyrics with guitar feedback and a percussive pulse.
The album announcement is accompanied by the release of lead single and titular track ‘Funeral For Justice’, which immediately showcases the band’s mastery of powerful guitars and even more powerful lyrics.
Speaking about the upcoming record, singer and guitarist Moctar shared, “This album is really different for me. Now the problems of terrorist violence are more serious in Africa. When the US and Europe came here, they said they’re going to help us, but what we see is really different. They never help us to find a solution.”
Last year, the band were on tour in the United States when a military coup occurred in their home country of Niger. Unable to return home to their families, they launched a GoFundMe to support their indefinite stay in the United States.
“Mdou Moctar has been a strong anti-colonial band ever since I’ve been a part of it,” bassist and producer Mikey Coltun added, “France came in, fucked up the country, then said ‘you’re free.’ And they’re not.”
Following the release of Funeral For Justice, Mdou Moctar have a number of dates lined up in the United Kingdom, including a slot at End of the Road Festival in Dorset.
Funeral For Justice is out on May 3rd. Watch the video for the lead single, ‘Funeral For Justice’, below.
