Matthew Perry’s favourite episode of ‘Friends’

The tragic death of the former Friends icon Matthew Perry has demonstrated just how much he meant to fans across the world. Tributes from the world of politics, TV and sports flooded social media, shortly followed by his Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox and Matt LeBlanc, with Perry being immortalised by the memories of his nearest and dearest.

First finding fame in the late 1970s and 1980s, Perry featured in a number of TV shows before he found his feet with Friends in 1994, including Second Chance, Sydney and Home Free. Yet, while the industry would recognise him as a rising comedy talent, it wasn’t until Friends that he would be considered a bonafide star, featuring in each and every 234 episodes of the show.

Stars of TV shows aren’t often vocal about their favourite episodes from their iconic series, but Perry once named his favourite Friends episode of all time.

During an interview with Indigo in 2022, Perry named ‘The One With The Blackout’ from the very first series of the show as his favourite from the entirety of the Friends run. “We did an episode that was during a blackout in New York City,” he told the publication, “and I was stuck in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre and very excited about that – and then the other five actors were doing really, really funny things in Monica and Rachel’s apartment”.

Continuing, he added: “That was when I first realised that everybody on this show was great – and that every episode was sort of like a mini movie…It was that well-written, well-directed, and acted. Just one of the greatest experiences of my life”.

Surprisingly, however, Perry didn’t name Friends as his favourite role of all time, instead naming a movie that few people actually got the chance to see. During an Instagram Q&A, Perry once said: “I did a movie that I love called Fools Rush In with Salma Hayek – that was probably my best movie”.

The Friends star played Alex, a man who has a one-night stand with a woman (Hayek) only to spark a relationship with her when he discovers she’s pregnant. The movie was directed by Andy Tennant, the rom-com expert who also created Hitch with Will Smith and Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon.
