Matt Damon praises “massively entertaining” Christopher Nolan movie ‘The Odyssey’

Matt Damon has praised the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie, The Odyssey, in which he stars as the bold, brave Odysseus on his quest to return home.

Nolan’s upcoming movie, which stars Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson, is set to be released in cinemas on July 17th, 2026.

Speaking exclusively with Empire, the seasoned actor praised Nolan’s Oppenheimer follow-up, deeming it “exactly what you want of a summer movie.”

Damon also acknowledged that, given all the tools that Nolan has at his disposal, the film “should be the most massively entertaining film. It should feel mythic.”

He didn’t stop there. Damon also admitted to Empire that filming the epic undertaking was “without hyperbole, that it was the best experience of my career.”

Despite the magnificence expected from any Nolan picture, Damon recounted that often his directorial style was surprising. For example, he explained, “We were shooting [the Trojan horse] stuff next week, so I go, ‘How are you going to do it?’ And [Nolan] goes, ‘I don’t know. We’ll just get in there and figure it out.’”

According to The Martian actor, Nolan hasn’t shied away from any elements of the classic plot, sharing, “If you’re going to have an existential crisis as you pass the Sirens and you’re lashed to a mast, it’s there. If it says you’re running for your life from a Cyclops, you’re going to run for your life. Chris doesn’t hide the ball.”

The Odyssey star Tom Holland has also drummed up a lot of excitement for the 2026 movie after recent comments branded the film “unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

Elsewhere in The Odyssey universe, Nolan was criticised by the Sahara International Festival for filming The Odyssey in an occupied West Saharan city, which has been under Moroccan rule for over half a century.
