Lana Wachowski is writing and directing the new Matrix 4 which will star both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, it has been confirmed.

Both Reeves and Moss will return to the franchise in their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity and Wachowski, who created the original film with her sister Lily, will co-write the screenplay with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell.

After years of speculation that the Wachowski’s were on board to return to the Matrix, no explanation has been made as to why Lana will approach the new film without her sister.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Wachowski said in an interview with Variety. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Warner Bros chairman, Toby Emmerich, also said to Variety: “We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” while confirming the new picture. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe,” he added.
