Former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds was working with Bam Margera before his death
Brent Hinds, the former Mastodon guitarist, died in a motorcycle accident last week. Now, Jackass star Bam Margera has revealed that the pair were working on new music together before his death.
Hinds passed away on August 20th at the age of 51 due to a motorbiking accident. He originally founded Mastodon alongside drummer Brann Dailor, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and bassist Troy Sanders in 2000, but departed the group in March 2025
Margera, the 45-year-old musician and skater, has since taken to Instagram to pay homage to his friend. He began, “I am devastated and still processing the tragic loss of one of my closest friends Brent Hinds. Around the time Ryan Dunn died, I met Brent on the Soundwave Festival in Australia and said to him in a joking way, “You look and act like Ryan Dunn and we should just be best friend,s” and he said, “ok,” and just like that we were.”
He then revealed that the pair had been in the studio together on behalf of the heavy metal band Amore Ad Lunam. Margera wrote, “Brent and I recently had been recording tracks on a new album with a new band I have been doing vocals with called Amore Ad Lunam… It has been a privilege and honor working with Brent. I cherish the time we spent together working on guitar tracks and vocals that we just very recently layed down together.”
The statement accompanied a slideshow of videos, ending with footage of Hinds accidentally breaking Margera’s arm with a golf club, which Margera referenced jokingly.
Mastodon originally released a statement that detailed their immediate and overwhelming grief. It said in part, “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many.”
They have since played their first live show since his passing, where Brann Dailor addressed the crowd to admit, “We had the ups and downs of a 25-year relationship, you know what I mean? It’s not always perfect, it’s not always amazing, but we were brothers to the end. We really loved each other.”
Margera and Hinds’ partnership comes as Hinds’ relationship with his former bandmates had deteriorated. He made a series of unfavourable social media comments about Mastodon, such as a post in which the guitarist said he was “kicked out” and wrote online, “I’ve never met three people that were so full of themselves. It’s disgusting.”
