Massive Attack win PETA award for championing veganism at shows

Massive Attack has won an award from PETA for championing veganism and making environmentally conscious choices at their shows.

The trip hop collective, currently made up of Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja and Grant ‘Daddy G’ Marshall, have received the ‘Hit The Right Beat for Animals and the Planet Award’ from PETA in recognition of their environmental efforts during their most recent tour of the UK.

For their show at the Co-op Live in Manchester, the band managed to persuade the venue to commit to a fully vegan food menu for the night, making it the first major arena in the UK to do so.

Additionally, for Massive Attack’s ACT 1.5 show in Bristol last year, where the same fully vegan food offerings were adopted, scientists estimated that food emissions were cut by up to 89 per cent, compared to a standard live music gig with non-vegan food.

Elisa Allen, the Vice President of Programming at PETA, said in a statement: “By championing plant-powered meals, Massive Attack is pushing its legions of fans, other artists, and even entire stadiums to face the music that the meat, egg, and dairy industries are decimating the environment.”

She added: “PETA is delighted to recognise Massive Attack for showing everyone that being an angel for animals and the planet is as easy as choosing delicious vegan fare.”

The organisation said that the band would receive a letter of thanks and a certificate in recognition of their award.

It comes as Massive Attack have inspired a number of recent environmental initiatives within the music industry, with their native city of Bristol recently announcing plans to decarbonise music shows based on the ACT 1.5 gig, which broke records as the show with the lowest carbon emissions in the world last year.

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, said of the scheme, “Clean energy and the creative industries are both key growth sectors for us over the coming decade. Next summer in Bristol, major events on council sites can follow Massive Attack’s lead by cutting pollution for live events.”
