‘Marty Supreme’ shocks New York Film Festival with surprise world premiere
At the New York Film Festival, Timothée Chalamet made an unannounced appearance for the surprise premiere of Marty Supreme.
The upcoming movie, directed by Josh Safdie, stars Chalamet as ping-pong player Marty Mauser, who is on the pursuit of following his dreams in table tennis. Gwyneth Paltrow also stars as the wife of a rival player, who becomes entangled with Mauser.
The lead character is based loosely on the real-life story of ping-pong ace Marty Reisman, who was a hustler in New York City during the 1940s before climbing the ladder to become a great of his sport during the ’50s, which the film depicts.
Ahead of its release in cinemas in the UK on December 26th, 2025, a select audience were invited to a secret screening at the New York Film Festival on October 6th, which proved to be Marty Supreme. The film was introduced by Chalamet and Safdie.
Before Marty Supreme was shown to an audience for the first time, Chalamet said to the crowd (via Variety), “This movie — in many ways, beyond being about Marty Mauser — is a love letter to New York.”
The Oscar-nominee also declared that he was “so thrilled” that the world premiere was taking place in his hometown of New York. “I went to high school down the street. This is fucking awesome to be here,” he added.
Following the screening, which was met with a standing ovation, Safdie and Chalamet returned to introduce cast members Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler Okonma (Tyler, The Creator) and Odessa A’zion, as well as co-writer Ronald Bronstein.
Tyler said of working on the movie, which is his first major role, “I play piano and put on cool clothes — I do not act at all. And this man is so good, that I trusted him and said, ‘Anything you need. I don’t want to read this script. I will show up and be there’. Because I trust this man. And the way that he curated and handled every detail.”
