‘Marty Supreme’ actor Kevin O’Leary believes it should have used AI extras to save millions
Kevin O’Leary has claimed Marty Supreme would have saved millions of dollars by using AI extras.
In the upcoming A24 movie, directed by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet as the prodigious ping-pong player Marty Mauser, O’Leary plays Mauser’s manager, Milton Rockwell.
Now, the Shark Tank investor has discussed how AI could have saved the production money during an appearance on The Hill’s World of Travel: The Podcast.
O’Leary shared: “Almost every scene had as many as 150 extras. Now, those people have to stay awake for 18 hours, be completely dressed in the background. [They’re] not necessarily in the movie, but they’re necessary to be there moving around. And yet, it costs millions of dollars to do that.”
He then explained how AI could be used, stating, “Why couldn’t you simply put AI agents in their place? Because they’re not the main actors. They’re only in the story visually.”
O’Leary said this tactic could “save millions of dollars” which would potentially mean “more movies could be made”.
The businessman elaborated, “The same director, instead of spending $90 million or whatever he spent, could’ve spent $35 million and made two movies.”
O’Leary had no acting experience prior to his inclusion in Marty Supreme, and previously said he accepted the project because you need to “spend 30 per cent of your day outside of your comfort zone”.
He also claimed that Safdie and writer Ronnie Bronstein told him they are “looking for a real asshole, and you’re it”.
Marty Supreme had its world premiere on October 6th at New York Film Festival during a surprise screening. The movie was introduced by Safdie and Chalamet before co-stars, including Tyler, the Creator and Gwyneth Paltrow, appeared following the movie.
It is set to arrive in UK cinemas on December 26th, 2025.
