Martin Scorsese to direct Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in new ghost story movie

Martin Scorsese‘s next movie is set to take on What Happens at Night, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.

The story Scorsese has chosen for his 27th feature film, and his first since 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon, will reportedly follow an American couple who travel to a snowy, surreal European city to adopt a baby. It is based on Peter Cameron’s acclaimed novel of the same name, originally published in 2020.

The official synopsis for the book gives more detail: “It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child.”

It continues eerily, “On arrival, the couple checks into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer. Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.”

This film will mark the first directorial collaboration between Scorsese and Lawrence, though he did have producer rights on the upcoming film Die My Love, featuring Lawrence and Mickey 17 actor Robert Pattinson. This will be released in cinemas in November.

Lawrence and DiCaprio last starred together in Adam McKay’s apocalyptic satire Don’t Look Up. DiCaprio played a socially awkward scientist, while Lawrence played an astronomy PhD candidate.

DiCaprio’s most recent cinematic release, One Battle After Another, has received rave reviews, including a four-and-a-half-star review from Far Out: “Revitalising old stars and launching new ones, it does it all there too, as every single element of this movie, every person and every detail, feels masterful. It’s a Hollywood romp that has been through the rigours of arthouse attention to detail and intention to stir.”

Apple Original Films is in negotiations to finance and produce the upcoming project, alongside StudioCanal, per Variety. No release date has been announced.
