Martin Scorsese can’t watch his own movies in public

Killers of the Flower Moon director Martin Scorsese has revealed why he prefers not to attend public screenings of his own creations.

Scorsese, who recently became the most-nominated living director in the history of the Academy Awards, released his directorial debut, Who’s That Knocking at My Door, in 1967, and has since made another 25 narrative movies. However, he’s still uncomfortable watching his films in-front of an audience.

During a conversation with Variety, the filmmaker confirmed that he doesn’t sneak into public cinemas showing his own movies and shared his dislike for the modern cinema-going experience. “People talk and move around a lot,” he complained, “I’m short and there’s always a big person in front of me.”

“It’s the same with Broadway,” he continued, “I can’t go to theater. There’s someone in front of me, and I can’t see the stage or hear the show.”

As a result, Scorsese has grown to prefer Imax screenings, suggesting that audiences at regular screenings have become more raucous. “But maybe it’s always like in the ’50s when we used to yell back at the screen,” he shrugged. Nonetheless, the director maintained that it is “very important” to him to support films in theatres. “I just wait a while,” he concluded.

The director’s latest offering, Killers of the Flower Moon, took home over $150million at the box office and has received ten Academy Award nominations. The film is up for the coveted ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ titles, as well as awards for editing, costume design and cinematography. Lily Gladstone has received a ‘Best Actress’ nomination for her stunning lead performance, while Robert De Niro has received a nod for his supporting role.

In a four-and-a-half star review of Killers of the Flower Moon, Far Out wrote, “As expected of Scorsese, every shot is perfectly crafted and brings the nature of the true-crime narrative to new cinematic heights.”
