Margot Robbie dispels rumours of a ‘Barbie’ sequel
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has undoubtedly been the surprise hit of 2023, being the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, but even still, a sequel hasn’t yet been confirmed.
The star of the fantastic plastic Barbie movie, Margot Robbie, has dispelled rumours regarding a sequel, however, telling the Associated Press, “I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something…Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next”.
Barbie made $1.442billion for Warner Bros, with the film even being tipped for awards success thanks to a stellar screenplay from Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and excellent performances from Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu.
After waving away the possibility of a sequel, Robbie went on to add that she was most proud of its ‘original’ status, having not been a reboot, sequel or continuation of an established movie franchise.
“Original films can still hit huge at the box office. It doesn’t have to be a sequel or prequel or a remake, it can be totally original,” Robbie told the publication, “It can still be big – given the big budget to do that. And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants which is, you know, I think a misconception that a lot of people still have”.
Back in July, Gerwig backed up Robbie’s comments regarding a sequel, stating: “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got…I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero”.
