Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi to star in Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’
Promising Young Women director Emerald Fennell’s latest project is based on Emily Bronte’s classic novel Wuthering Heights, and it will see her reunite with Saltburn star Jacob Elordi along with Margot Robbie.
Fennell taking on this classic gothic story is a logical next step after Saltburn. Following the release of her twisted tale in 2023, Far Out wrote of the film, “The similarities between Oliver and Heathcliffe are striking,” likening Fennell’s creation to Bronte’s own.
However, while Wuthering Heights is considered to be one of the most important pieces of literature ever penned, it can be a nightmare to adapt to screen. While many have tried, with there being several movie adaptations spanning decades, none have truly broken through with anywhere near the level of success to match the cultural presence of the novel.
Notably, the plot is a difficult one to do justice because it spirals through various timescales in a tale of generational trauma and a revenge plot that lasts decades as Heathcliffe and Catherine Earnshaw’s doomed love, cursed by class divides, becomes the fuel for a haunting and dark gothic tale.
Nevertheless, Fennell is hoping to change that fact as she seemed up for the task. She’s also working with an A-List cast of trusted collaborators to help bring the vision to life. In the role of Catherine Earnshaw, Margot Robbie will step in front of the camera as well as serve as the film’s producer. She’s also working once again with Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi who will play the iconic role of Heathcliffe.
Fennell once dubbed Elordi as an “absolute genius”, showing she believes he has the skill and talent to take on such a huge and important character in the literary world.
The film is currently in pre-production and is expected to shoot in the UK in 2025. There is no word on when it might be released as it appears to still be a way off. Notably, Robbie is due to give birth to her first child in the next few months, which means shooting won’t take place for some time.
Robbie’s involvement in the movie comes after she previously heaped praise on Fennell as a director earlier this year. The Hollywood star told Variety of producing Saltburn and working alongside the English filmmaker: “Marketing an Emerald Fennell movie is tricky because she is the queen of plot twists, so all the greatest things, you can’t actually show. Because then it wouldn’t be so exciting when you see it in the movie.”
