Manchester hotel accused of cancelling rooms and tripling price due to Oasis reunion
The Maldron Hotel in Manchester has been accused of cancelling hotel rooms by fans planning to attend Oasis reunion shows at Heaton Park in the summer of 2025.
On August 27th, Oasis finally announced they were set to return to the stage next summer for a series of huge concerts in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Notably, the revelation came almost 15 years to the day since they parted ways following an altercation backstage before they were set to headline the Rock En Seine festival in Paris.
Excitement has been off the charts following the news. Significantly, the Oasis official website crashed due to the vast number of visitors prior to the announcement. Although tickets are yet to go on sale, fans up and down the country have already secured their hotels in anticipation of the shows.
However, many fans have been disappointed to discover their room has been cancelled by Maldron Hotels, and it’s now available to book online for a much more costly price. Oasis is scheduled to play four shows at Heaton Park next July, with each concert slated to hold 80,000 fans.
The issue was raised by the Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester, Sacha Lord, who asked Maldron on X: “I’m being contacted by several people who booked your hotel for the Oasis concert, to say their rooms have just been cancelled and are now back up for three times the price. I’m sure this is a “computer error”… easy to correct. Do the right thing.”
Lord’s statement was made following comments by a series of disgruntled Oasis fans on social media. For instance, X user Lily Stroud wrote: “Booked The Maldron Hotel Manchester yesterday for 11-13th and 18-20th before gigs were announced. Conveniently they have cancelled our bookings ‘due to a technical error’. Obviously done it so they can resell for ridiculous prices.”
Another X user, David O’Gorman, shared a screenshot informing him of the cancellation from Maldron. In the message, they wrote: “We are writing to inform you of an issue with your booking at Maldron Hotel Manchester City Centre. Due to a technical error, you have received a confirmation for a booking that was not successfully made. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate your booking at this time.”
They also apologised for “the inconvenience this may cause”. O’Gorman claimed he had booked the hotel upon Oasis announcing their dates at 8:00am on August 27th, and then received the cancellation at 8:15pm that evening.
Maldron Hotels has not yet responded to Far Out’s request for comment, and in a newly released public statement, Maldron Hotels said: “Due to a technical error with our booking system on 26th & 27th August 2024, substantially more rooms were booked than were available for the nights of the Oasis concerts on 11th/12th/19th/20th July 2025 at the Maldron Hotel Cathedral Quarter. As a result, we are unable to honour all bookings made on these dates, and we are actively engaging with customers regarding these bookings.”
Maldron also said they are not currently taking bookings while they carry out an investigation into the issue. They maintain it “is not an attempt to resell rooms at inflated prices, rather an overbooking issue due to a technical error with our booking systems”.
Additionally, the hotel chain stated that the same technical error meant that “a small number of customers were able to book the rooms at a higher price later that evening”, which have now also been voided. However, Maldron say they will honour all bookings made before August 26th.
Where are Oasis set to play on tour?
The run of dates will begin with a two-date residency at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff starting on July 4th before Oasis return home to Manchester to perform four shows at Heaton Park.
The Manchester icons are also booked to headline four dates at Wembley Stadium in London and host two concerts at the Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. Additionally, the Gallaghers will visit Ireland for a pair of concerts at Dublin’s Croke Park in August.
Hotels in each of the cities mentioned above have already steadily increased in price for the applicable dates since the official announcement was made on August 27th, raising question marks about the affordability of concerts of this nature.
It remains to be seen whether more dates will be added to the tour, however, this is a strong possibility considering the expected demand for tickets.
