Which major studio has made the most films?

The entire history of cinema has been a constant process of artistic innovation on the one hand and consolidation for a few industry giants on the other. From the time that Thomas Edison’s company appeared to take over the entire US market for making and distributing films in 1908 to the domination of the so-called ‘Big Five’ today, who own 80% of cinema capital in North America, the big fish have either outswum or swallowed the rest.

One of the significant advantages that major studios have over small operations is the infrastructure and cumulative labour power that big-money backing affords them. With the apparatus at their disposal, they’re able to churn out several times more movies per year than any independent company could manage. Their films will often be more expensive and take longer to make, but they have the capital to spare and the capacity to run several productions concurrently.

It’s no wonder, then, that the present-day Big Five and their subsidiary dominate the list of highest-earning studios in terms of historic box office takings. Yet, there isn’t always a direct correlation between how much a studio earns and how many movies they make. A production company certainly has to have released a critical mass of films to be near the top of the earnings leaderboard. But quantity alone doesn’t equal success.

Universal Pictures and Paramount, for example, have each released fewer than 1,000 films during their entire 112-year histories. However, when it comes to box office grosses, they both rank among the top six studios of all time.

So, which studio has been most prolific?

Meanwhile, the likes of Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have each produced more than 3,000 movies yet have brought in less money than Universal overall. Nevertheless, these two studios pale in comparison to the most prolific production company in cinematic history.

Warner Bros Studios bucks the trend among the other majors to prove that sheer quantity does pay off in the end—as long as you have the quality to go with it and manage to outproduce your main competitor multiple times over.

As well as taking the crown of biggest-earning studio in history, Warner Bros has produced a staggering 7,000 movies in its century as a studio, according to its own official history. And when these movies include the likes of Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and the DC Comics cinematic universe, it’s easy to see why they’re doing so well at the box office.

The studio that brought talkies to the cinema and introduced the world to Bugs Bunny has been going since 1923 and has been among the top players in the industry for most of the intervening period. While its output may have slowed down compared to days gone by, with 18 Warner Bros pictures released in cinemas last year, its overall output will take some beating. Right now, no other studio comes within 3,000 films of its total. Relentless.
