Lucy Dacus has finally released her long-time fan favourite, ‘Thumbs’, a stalwart in her live shows since 2018.
Last summer, one of her fans created an account on Twitter titled ‘Has Lucy released Thumbs yet?’ and now their wishes have now finally been answered as Dacus has finally given the track an official release. The boygenius member’s haunting vocals are the only prominent instrument used in the track, with everything else merely supporting her raw delivery.
There’s no escaping her voice, which makes it an intimate and searing listen as Dacus pours every last drop of her heart into ‘Thumbs’ — which is now available for everybody to enjoy and no longer a secret exclusive to her hardcore fanbase.
Dacus explained in a statement that the track was written during a 15-minute car journey to dinner in Nashville several years ago. “Like most songs I write, I wasn’t expecting it and it made me feel weird, almost sick. It tells the story of a day I had with a friend during our freshman year of college, a significant day, but not one that I had thought of for years,” she explained.
She added: “I started playing it live a month or so later during the boygenius tour after Phoebe and Julien encouraged me to. I knew I wanted a long time to get used to playing it since it made me feel shaky, so I ended sets with it for about half the shows I played in 2019. Before I played it, I would ask the audience to please not record it, a request that seems to have been respected, which I’m grateful for.”
‘Thumbs’ arrives as the first snippet of new music from Dacus in two years, and it’s bloody lovely to have her back. In the wake of her boygenius’ teammate Phoebe Bridgers owning 2020 and Julien Baker delivering a masterclass on 2021’s Little Oblivions, all eyes remain on Dacus to see what she’s got up her sleeve.
If ‘Thumbs’ is anything to go by, we needn’t worry about quality, but we might need to bulk-buy some Kleenex.
