Luca Guadagnino shares promising update on ‘American Psycho’ remake

Director Luca Guadagnino has shared a promising new update on his upcoming take on American Psycho which is currently in development.

Last October, Lionsgate revealed they were in the process of working on the project with Guadagnino at the helm. Additionally, Austin Butler has also been heavily linked to the role of Patrick Bateman, which Christian Bale played in Mary Herron’s original in 2000.

Speaking at CinemaCon earlier this week, Guadagnino told those in attendance: “We are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much.”

Guadagnino confirmed that Scott Z Burns is working on a script, which he praised, noting, “He’s doing an incredible job. The script is coming out very handsomely.”

In December, Variety claimed that Butler was lined up to star in the main role. However, judging by Guadagnino’s latest comments, the role of Bateman is yet to be decided. He shared that he’s currently locked in “conversation with very exciting performers to play the leads.”

The director also revealed that he hopes to return to CinemaCon in the future to share a first-look at the movie once it’s ready to do so.

While Guadagnino has confirmed that his American Psycho movie is happening, Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote the original novel, played down reports of the film in January.

Ellis said on his podcast: “I have a feeling it’s fake news. I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play [character] Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn’t have a deal either.”

At this stage, there is no timeline for when American Psycho will enter production.
